Book review: Holy Cow by Hope Egan

We have just finished reading "Holy Cow" by Hope Egan. The book covers several aspects of Kosher eating and makes a strong case that all commands of Torah are still valid for us today. Her section on the separation of meat and dairy (which I have been practicing) was a real eye-opener! I would be very interested in hearing a rabbinical interpretation on Genesis 18. I was disappointed with the section covering Kosher vs Organic meat. She seems to have departed from scripture in favor of her own interpretations. Although the case could be made for organicially raised Kosher meat, the scriptures seem more concerned with how an animal is slaughtered than with how it is raised. The main issue being removing all traces of blood from the meat.
The second part of the book, "Man Alive" was well written in an authoritative manner. I enjoyed this section greatly. Mr. Lancaster takes a close look at several passages of Messianic Scripture commonly used to refute following Yahveh's food laws found in Torah.
The other issue that I must take against both authors is that they repeatedly state that following a Kosher diet is not a salvation issue. I must state that I believe strongly that disobedience in even the smallest areas could cause us to "miss the boat."
Overall, I rate the book an eight (out of ten). If you would like to read this book, go to http://www.holycownews.com/ and pick up a copy.

P.S. - My computer has caught a bad virus that will have to be manually removed. (Internet pork or shellfish) I am sending it in to be repaired and hope to be back online in about a week. So, if you are looking for me, be patient!

Shalom,

-PAUL
